Every once in awhile I have opportunities in my life that stand out more than others; experiences that I'll always remember. I've noticed a pattern in these experiences. They all require sacrifice of both time and money, along with my own comfort-zone.
I had felt that I should go to General Conference for the past few months. At church meetings, in my personal prayer, and as I studied the scriptures, I felt an urging to go to Conference. I felt I really needed to go. So in accordance with these fairly strong and repetitive promptings I asked Andy if he'd like to go and we organized a Trip.
The car ended up being filled with Myself, Tyler, Andy, and Natalie. Now, I thought this was fine, but I thought I'd like to take someone else i know so that if Andy and Natalie wanted to do the pseudo couple thing they've been doing I could avoid being bored or feeling awkward.
I needed someone to go with me and I asked around to my friends, but nobody wanted to go. I've been posting in an LDS group on Myspace for a couple years now and let them know I was going to Conference and how stoked I was about the opportunity. One of the people, Lizzie, responded by asking if she could tag along with us up to Utah.
Now, I've had plenty of bad experience with meeting people from the internet, so I was a bit worried. This girl seemed really cool, but you can just never know. After considering it for a minute or so I thought to myself, "what the heck?!" I reasoned that if it was awkward it would at least make for good stories, but if it wasn't it would be a great experience and I knew she could use this experience because of some trials I was aware she had been going through. This is were the whole, "comfort zone" thing comes into play. Making that decision was one of the best choices I have made recently.
So, according to plan we left Apple Valley at about 9:30 or 10:00 Thursday night. We stopped by Walmart to pick up some Jerky for the road trip and off we went towards Utah.
Liz lives in Saint George so we got her address and went to her Apartment and picked her up. I was a bit nervous and it probably showed in my shaky voice and scattered actions, but it all went away when Liz said something like, "it's so good to finally meet you" and reached out her arms to give me a hug. That really made me much more comfortable and let me know that she's just a real person and there's no need to worry about awkwardness. The drive continued as we went to Mt. Pleasant. The drive took 10 hours total, which is utterly horrible. Traffic in Vegas was horrendous. We ended up at Andy's Grandma's place at about 7:00 in the morning. We were all pretty tired and, after breakfast, went to sleep.
After only two hours of sleep I woke up and couldn't get back to bed so I went into a room alone and read some Doctrine and Covenants. I got quite a lot of reading done and I didn't feel tired like I should have.We bummed around Andy's Grandma's house for awhile and then decided to go see the Manti Temple. I'm glad we did. It was really beautiful and neat to be at such a historic place.
After the Temple we rode back over to Grandma's place and had a great dinner. After dinner we went out to Provo to hang out with Elise and get some Indian food. It was nice to see her again and the food was great!
After the great dinner we hung out in the parking lot for about half an hour. Todd and Jessica met up with us to say Hi and after some long and tedious debate we decided to go to Elise's and watch a movie. We got there and met her roommates who seem pretty cool. We chose Clue as our viewing experience that night.
The next morning started too early, but I was so stoked about Conference I didn't really notice the lack of sleep.
